Great book with much wisdom,
By Chris A -
I have worked in record shops, recording studios and clubs and I can safely say that this book deserves to be a standard text. It delivers masses of knowledge, not only on the subjects of Djing and production but also on the mindset and discipline essential to make a success of one’s self in the music and performance industries.

Starting with a detailed technical section the book describes the hardware and techniques associated with a variety of DJing styles, using easy to understand diagrams. It goes on talk about the professional skills needed to promote one’s self as a performer/musician, using many examples and directing to resources that give examples and provide services.

The following section provides guidance to improve one’s motivation, time management and efficiency. There is a lot of wisdom in theses pages, which will help anyone who wishes to work towards a goal.

Then there are masses of bonus recourses from example playlists to contracts and contacts. The DVD is a great resource and gives a genuine insight into the experiences of world leading music industry professionals my favourite is the interview with Simon Dunmore, head of Defected Records.

All in all this is a great book and I wish I had this when I started to become interested in the music industry, it would also have been useful during my University course in Music and Sound Technology.

Success is more than limelight and bank balance…,
By Euan Mitchell (Coalition Events/Soultonic Rec… -

Can only add to the glowing reviews on here but will try to add another perspective. Having been a DJ/producer/promoter and one time record label owner for 15 years, I can honestly say that I wish I’d have had access to this resource long before now.

I was initially very sceptical of the dual approach to the book as I now have a parallel career as a business coach – I expected certain things from it based on the title and initial online marketing campaign which if I’m honest I found to be slightly too ‘Americanized’, in that it appeared it may be style over substance and also took advantage of the world of affiliate marketing which for those familiar with the arena can sometimes feel a bit too ‘get rich quick’. Don’t get me started on the self-help publishing market….

That said, many of the insights gathered in this book are familiar to me having worked with and respected for some time the co-author, Ben Brophy. Putting aside initial cynicisms (for those starting out in the industry, you’ll no doubt collect as many of these as records over the years), I discovered that this book has something that many others lack- a soul. This sounds pretentious but I genuinely believe that this book was written from a place that goes deeper than a desire for material wealth and perceived public success, two things which I see in so many people particularly in the music industry.

The real success in anything we do comes from the journey and the relationships formed along the way – we can easily teach/learn technical skills but it’s harder to nurture passion and talent whilst maintaining a vision for how we successfully negotiate and interact with others for mutual long term benefit rather than immediate self-interest. This book goes a long way to addressing this often overlooked but crucial balance and should prepare anyone serious about making music their livelihood to both sustain and enjoy this path.

Apparently the book was also endorsed by Charlie Sheen and printed using tiger blood* – what more could you want? ;-)

Mat Playford -

ok so firstly i like to say how lucky i feel to have met danny and ben(co-author) , i open a record shop with ben and have know him from 7 years old

Ben was and still is one of the reasons i do what i do ! he gave me my first lesson on technics and also taught me to play keyboards.

i was lucky enough to meet danny in 1998 , Danny was the first person to support me on the radio 1 , i still have not beating the feeling that i got when after the wmc in march 2000 he played track i made with paul woolford on the radio

That year on my birthday Danny took me to space ibiza for the first time on a sunday … 10 years on im the Resident there and have just completed a double cd for we love space ,

this book should be use in schools , the video dvd is also great and has all the information any young man need to be in this game

if you have the power of intention in you then it will happen might take a while like it has for me but ill will happen

In the words of Stefan Goldmann

The channels that do work are open to those who possess endurance, individuality and substance.

thank you Danny and Ben

Much more than a book about DJing.,
By R. B. Harvey “Blair Harvey”

I’m well impressed with the content of this book – I’ve learnt so many more ways to get the best out of myself and my decks. All of the information is well laid out and is very user-friendly. It’s a great looking book too – well designed, bright and inspiring.

I really like the sections on ‘personal development’ which can help you to become a better person overall and much more than a good DJ. Overall, a positive, motivating and engaging read.

BUY OR CRY,
By Tristan da Cunha (backtobasics/Redux/2020vision) -

As a dj and producer myself for well over a decade i thought i knew pretty much everything that was needed to know about djing and success until this book came along. Sure there have been some fantastic books published in the past that have been written and covered the same subjects, however this book goes much deeper than the actually practical / theoretical information that is usually presented. In this book there is not only all bases covered for the technical side of Djing there is also the mental / spiritual aspects covered too which i feel are just as important to succeeding in this industry. In life ones attitude always determines the altitude that we reach in our respective fields and this book clearly outlines and describes this notion. I would say that anyone into music and playing music should check this amazing book out… no matter what level you are at in “the game”. It also comes with a superb 4hr dvd with some of the leading figures in dance music giving us their years of experience in well conducted interviews. I can’t recommend this book enough or commend Danny , Ben and Jerry for doing such a fantastic job on this book. This is THE book to own on the subject and should satisfy anyone looking for a deeper insight into DJing and the industry. Presented beautifully in a solid hardback with accurate diagrams and inspiring information. BUY or CRY. I can honestly say that you won’t be disappointed with the amount of info here for the amount of money you’ll pay. X

all round great,
By J. Simmons (London)

This book is well structured, weighted with industry expert knowledge and reads very well. I particularly like the Success aspect which I feel postitively differentiates it from other DJ books I have read out there. Practical sound advice through out, certainly would recommend.

Excellent,
By Phil Robo -

I found this book a while ago and haven’t been able to put it down since. It’s really informative, clear and full of useful and helpful tips. If you’re interested in Djing and Music, don’t waste your money on any other books, buy this one instead, you won’t be dissapointed.

A must for any aspiring person,
By The Dead Rose Music Company -

This is the new bible for DJ’s, Producers or anyone who would like to be involved with the music industry. Not simply is it a great resource for DJs but it also explores the realms of living science. I am a musician and a DJ and was given this book by Danny himself and I have simply not been able to put it down. Learn from this man and the wealth of knowledge and his experience garnered over the last 20 years. A legend, a master, great ears and all round bloody good bloke. Big love to all contributors.

Excellent book from a master,
By L. Jones “Lionel Jones” (London) -

I’m a great believer in modelling excellence.

I’m not a DJ but wanted to read the ultimate DJ book by a guy who has reached the top of his tree in his profession – Danny certainly has done that and his book is testament to this.

Packed full of information it has to be the first port of call for any budding DJ, if I had give a constructing comment it’s that it almost has too much info.!

It’s not just a great read but stands alone as an excellent reference book – it’s a DJ encyclopaedia.

Section 2 on life skills and achievement is particularly valuable.

I’d say if you are a beginner or established DJ there is something in here for you.

Or if you are just curious about the DJ phenomenon and want to know what the fuss is all about – buy this book…

Thank you Danny.,

Danny Rampling DJ Book Review,
By r d page -

A well produced book about Dj’ing!??? erm no! it’s like a dj’s life manual, it’s well written, with excellent positive advice, some of the djing stuff is a little old skool in parts as im a digital dj, but overall a very very good well recommended read!

A real text book,
By Luis Camacho (Mexico City) -

If you are looking a textbook as if were physics on High School this is a good one. Very well structured. Highly recommendable.

Absolutley Brilliant!!,
By Jeremiah -

WOW! I’ve been djing for a while but really needed some inspiration to take me to the next level. I was absolutely blown away the brilliant nuggets and timeless wisdom. Since reading the book I have now got more gigs and made lots more contacts. It simply gave me the confidence that I was lacking. Thank you Danny, you’re a true legend! Cheers :-) Jeremiah

Superb – SO Many Great Tips & Insights,
By nmyks -

I got given this as a christmas present and just wanted to say it’s brilliant. Like the other reviewers have said, there’s so much content over three sections plus the bonus DVD. As Rampling states, a large part of his success has always been a result of getting around people who are getting the results you want and finding out what they’re doing (a bit like watching Jamie Oliver or Ramsay showing you how they cook their grub). This book is like getting inside the heads of the leading DJ’s & music professionals. It’s packed with insightful ideas and most importantly, stuff you can apply straight away. He’s obviously well connected and got many friends in the industry and this is reflected in the number of high level professional contributors who have ‘chipped in’ to supply all the content in their area of expertise. This deserves to be an industry standard text for music courses & dj colleges. And even for bedroom Dj’s and older music enthusiasts such as myself it’s a first class purchase. Have learnt so much. Good work Rampling & crew and thanks to the missus for a top present.

Very happy neighbour…a winning gift!,
By Charlotte_Smith -

I’ve got to be honest, I’m not that ‘up’ on the current dance music scene and don’t know what the contents of this book are – but last week I bought this on the recommendation of my son for our neighbour’s birthday – he’s an aspiring DJ. I looked online and noticed this book came with an extra website and dvd so chose it over two other books that were recommended also in this arena. Last night the neighbour came around to say it was the best gift he’d received and it was brilliant. I’ve previously found this young man hard to buy for, but he was genuinely excited when talking about the book saying he’d learnt more in 6 days than in the previous 8 years – so that’s got to be good feedback.

Comprehensive and packed with practical, effective content,
By MusicLover35 -

I have to say that I am extremely impressed! I bought this book thinking it was going to be one thing and after reading it have to say it wasn’t what I was initially expecting. However, it has superceeded my expectations. The first section of the book delves deep into the technical aspects of DJ’ing right from the basics through to advanced – covering radio, promotion, pitfalls to avoid, tips to set yourself apart and great insight into legals, financials and useful little check lists.

It was section 2 that surprised me – and this is where I think this book may really make a big difference and where it offers something unique in relation to the other books I’ve read in this field (including Bill Brewster’s recommended How To DJ Properly). Rampling covers a whole range of ‘life skills’ – tips and techniques that one can apply in their life whatever their ‘walk’ to help them achieve more. Whilst I found myself thinking that many of the points were ‘common sense’ I realised that they weren’t ‘common practice’ – myself not doing many of them. I’ve personally already seen improvements in my relationships and outlook since implementing just 2 of the tips and I’ve barely started on the suggestions!

Section 3′s stacked full of what must be hundreds upon hundreds of bonus resources, links and specialist DJ charts. 17 sections worth. I haven’t even got into that section yet but it looks conclusive!

I’ve also still yet to watch the 4 hour DVD which is included – where Rampling interviews industry figureheads such as Pete Tong, Joey Negro & David Morales. So much to get through still.

If there’s one negative, I’d have liked a few more photos throughout and the insighful, useful content interspersed with more of his own personal anecdotes for which the dance industry is renowned. Maybe that will be in a follow up or second edition!

I used to listen to Danny Rampling when I was growing up – initially on Kiss FM then on his Love Groove Dance Party BBC Radio 1 show and I have to say I always enjoyed and appreciated his spirit of giving. This book really drives home how much he wants to share his life experience as fully as possible to help others and although I’ve not finished it all yet I’ve more than had my moneys worth already.

Hey man,my name is Josh Thompkins,my alias is HamiltonBeach in the music scene. I am currently in Shindand,Afghanistan with the U.S. Army (fighting the good fight) ,anyway,to be honest with you,i had never heard of you until about a few months ago when i got a Digital DJ tips news letter. The email said you have been on top for 20+ years and you were dropping a book that was supposed to be “THE BOOK” for all aspiring dj’s. I’ve loved digital music since getting into the scene back in July of ’99,I soon became one of the best dancers(liquid,pop/lock,and breaking) in about 6 month’s time. The scene in the states took a downturn in about 2005 when it seemed to be more about money and drugs rather than the music,so i parted ways with the scene but never parted ways with the music. In July 2010 my friends forced me onto a set of Technics and made me match my first beat. I was hooked, this is what i was meant to do. Shortly thereafter i bought a set of Stanton CDJ’s and learned to beat match within a month. I soon discovered Traktor and within 4 months was spinning a live set on hodtv.net with DJ Ambition. I told my friend about your book and asked him to get 2 copies(1 for me and 1 for him),he mailed it to me and it has been infinitely helpful. A lot of the stuff in the earlier parts of the book i had stumbled upon myself while learning to spin, but i read it all because i didn’t want to miss any tid bits of knowledge or something i had forgotten along the way. I’m just righting to say thanks for all the knowledge and to let you know that even in a war torn part of the world such as Afghanistan, music is still alive and is a driving factor in peoples lives and gets a lot of people through trying times. thanks again Danny

Sincerely,
Josh Thompkins aka Hamilton Beach
